Civil Service – A job for life.

I was interested to read this morning that the days of a permanent pensionable job for life within the civil service seem to be numbered. It looks like new public sector reform could have a huge impact on new recruits to the civil service.

The government appointed a new “powerful expert group” – sound a bit like another large consultancy bill. What route the reforms will take and how much it will actually save all seem a bit vague at the minute. Two key areas under the spotlight are permanent pensionable status of jobs and performance.

I guess this spelling the end of a job for life in Ireland. This has been absent from the private sector for decades but the civil service was the “safe bet” for individuals. Permanent pensionable status of jobs was the key attraction for many employees and now that this will be removed I wonder what impact this will have on attracting staff in the future.
