The European Commission has approved a grant of €14.8m to help former workers at Dell in Limerick to find new jobs.
The European Commission President José Manuel Barroso made the announcement of the €14.8m EC grant approved to help former Dell staff made redundant in Limerick.
Re-elected last week for the new 5 year term, José Manuel Barroso brought the news good news himself in the announcement while visiting Limerick this morning.
The grant application for assistance from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) was made by the Government and is one of the first to benefit from new EU crisis measures.
Mr Barroso said: ‘The economic crisis is affecting all European countries, but Limerick and the surrounding area have been hit hard by job losses at the local Dell plant and its suppliers.
‘The EU is built on solidarity. Our natural response is to come to the aid of those who are experiencing difficulties and to take decisive action to tackle the jobs impact of the crisis.’
The grant is to help 1,900 staff made redundant in Limerick earlier this year, to find new jobs.

Nationwide UK has created 20 new jobs in the IFSC -Dublin. A small announcemnt but positive all the same. The company is considered the world’s biggest building society with assets quoted of £200 billion sterling. According to reports there could be more jobs on the way as the building society is said to potentially explore expanding into other areas of banking.
There was however bad news for Cork as 130 jobs will go at Flextronics as a result of Voluntary Redundancy programme. This comes as the company restructures globally. The company announce 120 job cuts last november at its plant in Limerick. Flextronics had a heavy business relationship with Dell so they are feeling the pain from Dell closures in Ireland.

It looks like I spoke too soon yesterday with my previous post. I guess I tempted fate.
Dell Ireland announced that it will be cutting 250 jobs for its 4500 workforce in Ireland. Operations in Cherrywood in Dublin will be hardest hit as most jobs to go are in support functions – Marketing, IT and Administration. Dell insists that no Manufacturing jobs will be lost but there are expected to be some job losses in Limerick Operations.
Dell has been established in Ireland for a good few years and is deemed a high profile employer in Ireland which magnifies this news. The company cited slow computer sales as the driver for global cost cutting when it announced the bad news to staff on Tuesday.
I find it interesting that manufacturing has not been affected as most job loss in Ireland seems to be manufacturing. I remember a number of years back there were strong rumours of Dell relocating operations to Mexico (I think!!)

Ryanair announced that it will be cutting 40 jobs in Dublin in May. 40 telesales jobs will go at their Dublin call centre. Is this a result of rising oil prices or is it because everyone is booking online?
Thermo King has announced the creation of 19 new jobs in Galway. Thermo King currently employs 600 staff in the region and design and manufacture transportation refrigeration.
Dell has announced the closure of a plant in Austin with the loss of 900 jobs. Ok this is not Irish news but this is part of a 10% cut in global workforce for Dell. They employ about 4,000 staff in Ireland in Dublin & Limerick.
There are fears for 80 jobs in Shannon with Unbrako Europe SPS International following the sale to a US firm. This is worrying news as the company has been in Shannon since 1960.
