The plans for Grangegorman will provide a consolidated campus for the Dublin Institute of Technology in addition to purpose built mental health facilities and a new permanent primary school run by Dublin 7 Educate Together for 400 pupils.

In a much-neeed boost to the beleaguered construction industry, 450 full-time jobs will be created for a ten year period during the development of the Grangegorman site. In addition, more than 1,100 full-time jobs will be created on completion of the works.

22 of the 27 schools that form DIT will move to the site. DIT accounts for over 8.4 % of the total higher education sector in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said: “This is a significant project in terms of generating jobs and providing a key piece of infrastructure for education to develop our knowledge economy.”

In her address to the representatives of the main stakeholders at the launch, the Tánaiste and Minister for Education Mary Coughlan said: “Even in these challenging economic times, we as a Government have recognised the potential of this site and have grasped the opportunity to provide a state of the art educational campus for the greater Dublin area as well as for the existing vibrant local community.”

Meanwhile 120 jobs are to be created in the pharmaceutical sector.

Dublin-based company Wellmed Ireland and US pharmaceutical company Conrex have announced the positions, which will be filled over the next year.

The jobs will include the areas of healthcare, pharmaceutical, beauty, sales and marketing.
