40% of SME’s in Ireland have cut staff

With all the focus on the large MNC’s we sometimes forget about the smaller fish – the SME’s. These companies make up a great part of the employment figures in Ireland thus combined play an important role in the employment landscape in Ireland. Worryingly 40% of SME’s have cut staff in the last 3 months with only 15% indicating that they employed new staff. This survey which talked to 400 companies highlights the difficult trading conditions for SME firms. So were are the big casualties – Construction Sector related companies, followed by Distribution Sector related companies and then Manufacturing Sector related companies.

This bad news though is not confined to Ireland as reports suggest that the dreaded “R” word is evident in 3 other regions across Europe – Italy, France and Germany.

Irish SME Jobs hit by slump in Global Economy – Irish Jobs News

Filed under Irish Jobs, Jobs, News | No Comments

Is it all bad news for the Irish Jobs market?

We have been reading about the jobs loss at many of the larger employers in Ireland as this makes great headlines and sells newspapers. What about the SME’s in Ireland? How have they been affected?

Well the developments are similar and SME’s in Ireland are suffering as a result of global pressures. They have been affected directly by redundancies and temporary lay-offs. It is estimated that 20% of SME’s made staff redundant in 2007. 14% of SME’s expect to let staff go in 2008 and 12% expect to introduce short term lay-offs. These figures indicate that SME sector mirrors the economy in general.

Commentators blame rising costs for these development. Costs such as electricity, waste and water but I think this is a simplistic view. Ok increased costs affects competitiveness but there are other glaring factors like the global recession, exchange rates and more.

Will new start-ups create new Irish Jobs?

This negative news does not seem to be deterring new entrepreneurs in Ireland. Reports suggest that there are as many start-ups in Ireland. Good luck to them.

Central Statistics Figures on Irish Jobs.

Service Sector has lost 2320 jobs in 2008 to date.
Building and Civil Sector has lost 2022 jobs in 2008 to date.
Manufacturing Sector has lost 2019 jobs in 2008 to date.

Last month 12,000 people were added to the live register.

Market Turmoil – more jobs to go?

Posted by Jobs News

Only back after our St Patrick’s Day celebrations to find out the the sky nearly fell down yesterday. While we were partying without a care in the world stock markets plunged following the news of the sale of US investment bank -Bear Stearns. The Irish stock market closed at its lowest level for 3 years with more than 3.5bn wiped of the value of stock. Banks took the biggest hits with Anglo Irish Bank falling 15%.

This latest news is further indication that the US recession could last longer than expected. This could mean severe problems for the Irish economy with slower growth and higher unemployment.

This crisis could mean lower mortgage repayments for Irish home owners as the ECB may be forced to interest levels BUT how will be pay this with no job or income.

Ward closure and lack of recruitment = 300m euro HSE cutbacks.

Recent closures in wards in Midwest and lack of recruitment have sparked fears that plans to cut 300m euro in spending has already started to bite.

It is claimed that serveral wards in Ennis and Limerick are closed. It is also claimed that over 60 nurses are required for Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh.

I though the existing service was already creaking with the pressure – never mind these latest developments.

What makes a great place to work?

Is it the internal communications within the organisation?
Is it the work life balance offered within the organisation?
Is it the diversity and coordination of diversity?
Is it the training and development offered to the staff?
Is it the great HR departments?

To be honest it is probably a combination of all of the above with a few other factors added into the equation. No matter what the criteria is there are certainly 50 companies getting in right. JuicyCampus – A career stopper

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under JuicyCampus, News | 1 Comment

JuicyCampusIt is interesting that there have been so many discussions about online activity and how it can affect your career. It can have a positive impact (like the SEO guru who does my technical stuff) BUT most of the emphasis is on the negative impact. Particular focus is on Networking Sites like MySpace, Bebo and Facebook and how recruiters and potential employers are using these sites to gain additional information on applicants.

We can argue all day about the rights and wrongs of using this information but it is happening. I read yesterday about the NEW KID ON THE BLOCK (Not the 80′s American Boyband) – JUICYCAMPUS!! Now this site could be trouble. Certainly if your parents read it but it could prove interesting reading for potential employers.

This site is gaining in popularity in US and it is predominantly college gossip and a few top 10 listings. These rankings are not the sort that you probably want to come top of or even get listed on. Rather than me tell you about it check out the site for yourself.

I noted on the radio this morning that there is an Internet Advisory meeting for parents today all around Networking Sites information and safety. I would be interested to know if this new site is discussed.
