Smurfit Kappa workers were told at a meeting this morning that the Cork plant was to be ‘rationalised’ because of the downturn in the market.
It is one of nine paper plants operated by the Smurfit Kappa group in the country.
A meeting with SIPTU has been scheduled for tomorrow to discuss the planned lay-offs.
30 jobs are to be retained to service local clients in the Cork area.

There are fears in Westmeath for 400 jobs at Iralco as news broke that a liquidator had been appointed for the plant. Iralco has been in the region for 42 years so is part of the landscape. Management will not confirm if the closure is permanent or temporary but staff fear the worse with some indicating that the plant will close.
Jobs News at Smurfit Kappa
More bad news for Waterford and the Munster region as it has been announced that Smurfit Kappa will let 24 full time staff go next month. There are also 550 jobs in the balance at Waterford Westwood as they await news on possible dig out from the government.
