We missed this last week!!

Wavin announced that it will be making 50 staff redundant as it plans to downsize its operations in Ireland. Wavin employs 200 people in Dublin and Cork in manufacturing and distribution.

The news is not a great surprise as the Dutch company warned earlier this year that the slowdown of the Construction sector had impacted the demand for its products.

This is a clear sign that the slowdown in the construction sector is going far beyond the building sites in Ireland. The news is a blow for Irish jobs but also Balbriggan and Cork.

Wavin is a Dutch company with head office in Holland. It operates in 28 European countries, with manufacturing operations in 17 of those countries. Wavin employs 7,000 people and had a revenue of €1.6 billion for 2007.

There has been some positive news this week for Dublin with the announcement of 21 new jobs at IBM. For more details on this announcement read this post.
