Irish Jobs Index for the first quarter of 2012

Filed under Jobs | 1 Comment

The total number of jobs advertised online has increased by 4pc, driven by certain sectors achieving large gains, the IrishJobs.ie Jobs Index for the first quarter of 2012 reveals.

The 4pc increase follows a six-month decreasing trend in the previous two quarters. The sectors experiencing gains include production, manufacturing, materials (+82pc); science, pharmaceuticals and food (+52pc); banking and finance (+30pc); and engineering and utilities (+22pc). IT continues in a steady upward trend.

The IrishJobs.ie Jobs Index also reported sectors that experienced a decline in Q1 2012 compared with the previous quarter. The sectors that have seen a slump include telecoms (-55pc); transport and motor (-24pc); legal (-14pc); marketing (-14pc); publishing (-12pc); and retailing, wholesaling and purchasing (-11pc).

The IrishJobs.ie Jobs Index measures the number of jobs advertised online across the main recruitment websites in Ireland, serving as an indicator of jobs market trends in Ireland.

“The jobs picture overall is reasonably positive especially when considered in the context of an unemployment rate of above 14pc in Ireland,” said Dr Stephen Kinsella, lecturer in economics at the University of Limerick and author of the report.

“The IrishJobs.ie index is a good leading indicator of the state of the Irish labour market, because it gives a sense of what employers are expecting the future to look like.’’

Jobs in Ireland’s cities and counties

Relative to the second quarter of 2010, jobs in Dublin are showing a marked increase over time, but a sharp downturn relative to the last quarter, according to the IrishJobs.ie report.

In comparison to Dublin, jobs in Cork and Galway are surging ahead, while jobs in Limerick have fallen consistently and are consistently lower in absolute numbers than the other cities. Overall, the report reveals a mixed picture for Ireland’s cities, with some experiencing large increases, and others, sustained declines.

The IrishJobs.ie report looks at all corporate jobs advertised on IrishJobs.ie and Jobs.ie between 1 January 2012 and 31 March 2012.

Jobs Market – Recruitment Social Network

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Jobs Market | No Comments

Social Networking sites like LinkedIN, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Bebo, and others started dominating the use of the Internet worldwide. Even the search engines themselves are attracting less and less visitors every month this year. Social Media is what it is all about now.

The Irish Recruitment sector has coped on and the first Irish Social Networking site Jobs Market is rapidly growing in popularity. The Irish Job boards have no answer to a free service offered to everyone from Jobs Market web site. Some job sites have opened up and are offering free advertising to all employers, to try slowing down of the candidates leaving to the social media sites.

Jobs Market is a free web site where both Candidates and Employers can publish. Candidates publish their Profiles and even blogs, and Employers publish their Jobs and company profiles and again blog posts. Anyone can connect to anyone, and candidates can decide if to accept the offers to connect from the Employers.

A free site Jobs Market is best positioned to help Irish recession and get the available workforce in contact with the right employers.

Worky.com – Irish Jobs Site

The Good news is the launch of a new Irish Job Site: Worky. Worky seems to be a bit different than the traditional Jobs Sites in Ireland. YOU cannot search for a job or apply for a job there. What you do is you publish a profile and hope that someone will be interested in you. A bit like LinkedIN, where you publish your LinkedIN Profile, and wait for the employers to headhunt you. Worky is a new site, and you will not really be hired the same day you publish you profile, especially with the current recession climate. If you really need a job now, any of the leading Irish Jobs Sites is a safer bet.

LinkedIN is where you should invest some time if you have not already and when the recession is over your profile there will help you be found by the recruiters and headhunted.

And there is Worky being advertised extensively offline. So this might capture the Employers who do not use the Internet for their recruitment. The question is, how will they find you profile on the Internet if they do not use it?

Perhaps the Worky TV advert will tell you:

Job losses inevitable in Dublin City – Ireland Jobs News

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Irish Jobs, Jobs | 1 Comment

We can expect more job losses in Dublin City according to comments from Dublin’s Lord Mayor. This is largely due to a tough festive season trading in Dublin City. Shoppers took advantage of interest rates and cheaper prices in the north in town like Newry and Belfast. While Dublin and the South suffered the North and border towns flourished. It is believed shopping footfall was down anywhere between 10% & 20% during the run up to Christmas.

Do you think shoppers are wrong to avail of cheaper prices in the north?

Personally I didn’t go up north during this period but have done during the year for household shopping. Traffic congestion and the fact that I don’t like shopping deterred me over the festive period.

Over 25% of the mortgage brokers in Ireland fear for their jobs as the Irish Housing & Mortgage market grinds to a halt. Worse yet there are predictions that this could remain for some time to come. A recent conference in Brussels indicated that the Western European construction sector will not recover until 2011.

Ireland is not alone as the UK market is suffering too. Recent reports indicated that the economy shrank 1% in the last 3 months. Property prices are on a downward spiral and the construction sector mirror that of Ireland.

Xerox cut 3,000 jobs & other Irish Jobs News.

Hot on the heels of Yahoo’s announcement that it will cut 10 percent of its global workforce (1,500 staff, Xerox announced it plans to cut 3,000 jobs across the globe. Xerox broke the negative job news as it released its quarterly earnings figures. They posted a 2% increase in profits but the slowdown in orders forced their hand to announce 1,500 job losses. Xerox has cut its workforce by just short of 9,000 since 2005.

Closer to home Cavan Town received some positive news with the creation of 70 new jobs in the region. Pauwels Trafo Ireland will create the new jobs as part of a 12m investment at its manufacturing facility. The company manufactures wind transformers. Dublin also received a similar boost when Microsol announced that it would be investing in Research & Development at its facility off Pearse Street in D2.

There has been a steady flow of R&D related announcements but unfortunately job loss announcements are greatly outweighing them. R&D jobs are sought after by the government but they generally do not offer high volumes of jobs.
