DSG Retail Ireland will create 100 jobs after confirming the first phase of a development programme that will see the opening of new stores in 2010 and a roll-out of a new retailing format. The programme will commence this summer.

In addition, plans are being developed to completely re-fit the PC World store in Galway and the Currys and PC World stores in Limerick following the success of Currys in Galway which has traded above expectations since its refurbishment in the latter part of 2009.

Business will operate as normal during these developments and no existing jobs will be affected during the course of this activity.

Commenting on the development, Declan Ronayne, Managing Director of DSG Retail Ireland Ltd said: “In a very tough economic environment, we have proved our retailing mettle by trading successfully. We’ve done this by focusing on Value, Choice and Service for customers, as well as trimming costs where possible and becoming an even leaner, more efficient operation. Introducing eye-catching campaigns like the UK Vat Campaign where we offered parity with Northern Ireland’s prices also drove customers to our stores.

Nationwide UK has created 20 new jobs in the IFSC -Dublin. A small announcemnt but positive all the same. The company is considered the world’s biggest building society with assets quoted of £200 billion sterling. According to reports there could be more jobs on the way as the building society is said to potentially explore expanding into other areas of banking.

There was however bad news for Cork as 130 jobs will go at Flextronics as a result of Voluntary Redundancy programme. This comes as the company restructures globally. The company announce 120 job cuts last november at its plant in Limerick. Flextronics had a heavy business relationship with Dell so they are feeling the pain from Dell closures in Ireland.

Around 230 Dell employees at the company’s Cherrywood and Limerick operations are to lose their jobs over the next six months.

While the company is not giving out exact figures for the cuts, RTÉ understands that 10% of staff are to be lost in Dublin and Limerick.

Meetings were held with 2,300 staff members at the two locations this morning to announce the move.

It is understood that 130 people will be let go at the company’s operations at Cherrywood near Loughlinstown in Dublin, with a further 100 losses at its plant in Limerick.

Dell has already let 1,900 workers go in Limerick, and 250 in Cherrywood.

Cherrywood is home to Dell’s sales operation for the Irish market and to the home and small/medium business sector of the UK market.

The EMEA Enterprise Expert Centre – which provides high-level enterprise technical support for customers across EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) – is also located in Cherrywood.

Civil Service – A job for life.

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Civil Service, Irish Jobs, Jobs | 1 Comment

I was interested to read this morning that the days of a permanent pensionable job for life within the civil service seem to be numbered. It looks like new public sector reform could have a huge impact on new recruits to the civil service.

The government appointed a new “powerful expert group” – sound a bit like another large consultancy bill. What route the reforms will take and how much it will actually save all seem a bit vague at the minute. Two key areas under the spotlight are permanent pensionable status of jobs and performance.

I guess this spelling the end of a job for life in Ireland. This has been absent from the private sector for decades but the civil service was the “safe bet” for individuals. Permanent pensionable status of jobs was the key attraction for many employees and now that this will be removed I wonder what impact this will have on attracting staff in the future.

Dell staff in Limerick – The Compulsory (unpaid) Holiday?

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Jobs | 1 Comment

Workers at the US based PC vendor with a strong outpost in Limerick recently got an email memo from founder and CEO Michael Dell outlining the company’s latest efforts to cut costs this quarter. Irish blogs are mentioning the figure of 60 redundancies being sought for in Limerick.

Part of Dell’s scheme asks workers to take up to five days off without pay sometime within the next three months. The company also instituted a global hiring freeze, is offering voluntary severance packages, cutting travel budgets, and sacking temporary and contract employees.

“We’re taking action in this fourth quarter to reduce costs and improve Dell’s long term competitiveness in a time of economic uncertainty,” said Dell spokesman David Frink.

The unpaid leave will be strictly voluntary, Dell’s memo stated, but it also warned the company may resort to layoffs if this round of cutbacks doesn’t reduce operating expenses as hoped. The company didn’t say how many employees would need to take leave time to consider the program a success.

The three months time frame ends in January, not coincidently the same time as the close of Dell’s fourth quarter 2009.

Dell’s motto now is to save $3bn in annual costs by 2010 by means of layoffs, shifting to lower cost producers, layoffs, miscellaneous cost-cutting measures, and layoffs. Also, if there’s time afterward: layoffs. Dell has already axed at least 8,800 jobs since last year.

Of course, just like PC market share, Dell plays second fiddle to Hewlett-Packard in mass sacking. HP announced in September it would lay off 24,600 jobs worldwide as it merges the massive IT services organization EDS with its own existing massive IT service organization.

Jobs News Ireland – Microsemi, Avvio & Async Technologies

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Async, Avvio, Microsemi | No Comments

There seems to be nothing but bad jobs news, financial news or budget news at the minute so I always like to post something positive. The Mid West region has had its fair share of negative jobs news so I am delighted to tell you that there have been 200 new jobs announced.

Microsemi will increase its workforce by 185 over the next 2 years. The firm produces equipment for the US space exploration programme. Although there has been no official announcement there are positive signals of intent coming from the firm. This news makes more of an impact in the fact that only last May Microsemi reversed a decision to phase out its operations in Ennis which employed 108 people at that time. Also in Clare Async Technologies announced that it would be creating 11 highly-skilled jobs. Finally in Limerick Avvio is set to create 30 new jobs over the next two years.

Irish SME Jobs hit by slump in Global Economy – Irish Jobs News

Posted by Jobs News
Filed under Irish Jobs, Jobs, News | No Comments

Is it all bad news for the Irish Jobs market?

We have been reading about the jobs loss at many of the larger employers in Ireland as this makes great headlines and sells newspapers. What about the SME’s in Ireland? How have they been affected?

Well the developments are similar and SME’s in Ireland are suffering as a result of global pressures. They have been affected directly by redundancies and temporary lay-offs. It is estimated that 20% of SME’s made staff redundant in 2007. 14% of SME’s expect to let staff go in 2008 and 12% expect to introduce short term lay-offs. These figures indicate that SME sector mirrors the economy in general.

Commentators blame rising costs for these development. Costs such as electricity, waste and water but I think this is a simplistic view. Ok increased costs affects competitiveness but there are other glaring factors like the global recession, exchange rates and more.

Will new start-ups create new Irish Jobs?

This negative news does not seem to be deterring new entrepreneurs in Ireland. Reports suggest that there are as many start-ups in Ireland. Good luck to them.

Central Statistics Figures on Irish Jobs.

Service Sector has lost 2320 jobs in 2008 to date.
Building and Civil Sector has lost 2022 jobs in 2008 to date.
Manufacturing Sector has lost 2019 jobs in 2008 to date.

Last month 12,000 people were added to the live register.
