Tuam, Co. Galway, Valeo, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers has announced that it is embarking on a major expansion and RD&I programme at its Valeo Vision Systems (VVS) operation in Tuam, with an investment of €17m and the creation up to 100 new high-skilled positions over the next 3 years.  The investment which focuses on RD&I and high value manufacturing, is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Valeo is undertaking this major R&D initiative at the operation to target a growing share of the camera market with the development of the next generation of new camera/vision systems and supporting technologies for vehicle parking and manoeuvring.

This investment programme follows on from the successful launch by VVS Tuam of its first generation multi-camera systems on the market in 2008. It is now proposing to significantly expand its manufacturing operations to meet growing automotive customer demand and to develop the next generation vision systems for the global market.

Valeo Vision Systems has built up a strong RD&I competency at the plant and has developed close links with NUIG with the establishment of the Connacht Automotive Research (CAR) Group in 2004.

The additional jobs will be recruited across its manufacturing and RD&I operations. The investment will involve expansion of the plant (including the lease of existing units on the Tuam Business park), investment in advanced technology, training and RD&I.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Mary Hanafin TD paid tribute to the strong performance track record of Valeo’s workforce in Tuam and described the new jobs as a major boost for high-end manufacturing in Ireland.

‘The Government is anxious to support research and development projects that can create high-tech manufacturing jobs. Firms that invest in innovation to produce new products and services are the same ones that grow market share, generate jobs and pursue sustainable business models. This investment embeds Valeo’s operation in the group’s global business while at the same time creating top-level career opportunities for Galway,’ said Minister Hanafin.

Commenting on the VVS expansion, Fergus Moyles Director, Valeo Vision Systems said, ‘I am delighted to announce that recruitment is currently underway for the 100 positions announced today.  The expansion in Tuam is very significant within the Valeo group as it will play a leading role in ensuring that Valeo maintains its technological leadership position in vision systems, generating innovative new products which exceed our clients’ expectations.’

Welcoming the announcement, Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland said: ‘This is a very exciting development for Valeo Vision Systems in Tuam.  The decision demonstrates the parent company’s high regard for its Tuam operation, which, I am sure, is in no small part due to the company’s successful track record here. I wish to offer my congratulations to Fergus and his team in Tuam and would like to assure him that he has the full support of IDA Ireland behind him as he embarks on this ambitious new initiative in Tuam.  It is a great success story for high-value manufacturing in Ireland, which is at the centre of innovation and development for such a highly-respected global automotive company.’

The expansion of its facility at the IDA Business and Technology Park, Letterkenny, Co Donegal is supported by IDA Ireland.

“The decision by Zeus to expand its operation in Letterkenny is testament to the availability of a highly-skilled workforce in the north west region, the performance of its existing staff and the ease of doing business in Ireland,” stated Coughlan at the announcement. “On behalf of the Government, I look forward to providing continued support to Zeus as its Irish operation grows and develops.”

Séamus Hughes, general manager of Zeus in Ireland, said: “Since establishing our operation in 2005, our experience of doing business in Ireland has been a positive one. Due to the growth in our customer base in Europe, we are expanding our operation in Letterkenny to meet the demand for our medical and industrial speciality tubing product. Google creates 200 jobs in Ireland with new ops centre

With the establishment of a new operations centre in Dublin Google is to create 200 jobs here in Ireland immediately.

The new Dublin-based operations centre will be focused on the search engine giant’s location-based products including Google Local and Google Maps.

These new jobs will bring the number of people employed in Dublin by Google to a total of 1700.

“Dublin is rapidly becoming the multilingual internet capital of Europe and Google is proud to be leading the charge on this and further increasing our presence here,” said David Martin, director, Geo Operations for Google in Europe.

Martin said that the Dublin operations centre will take care of its location-based services for the pan-European market and will be developed as a centre of excellence.

“Google Maps displays so much more than the geography of a place, and now incorporates rich data from thousands of sources in different languages from across the world and also includes local business listings.  This operations centre will help to manage these data sources to give Google Maps users even more local information than before,” he added.

Martin explained that the decision to open a European centre for its location-based service was due in part to the fact that increasing proliferation of smartphones and uptake of Google’s own Android operating system meant that more and more people are using Google Maps, its free Sat Nav service for Android, Street View and so on, and the aim is to provide information that is as accurate and up to date as possible.

“The operations centre will be based in Eastpoint Business Park and plans to be fully operational this year. Google is working with local staffing partners CPL and Manpower to recruit and potential employees will be expected to graduates with one or two years experience in their field and strong IT skills,” said Paul Sweetman, director of ICT Ireland.

“This investment by Google highlights the strength of Ireland’s ICT sector, proving Ireland continues to be the location of choice for major multinational corporations.

“The ICT sector is leading Ireland’s Smart Economy with seven of the top ten global ICT companies having a major presence here. In addition to the 200 jobs announced by Google today, over 2,000 new jobs in the ICT multinational sector have been announced since January 2010. In 2009, the indigenous software sector grew by 6pc in export value.”

The company will now expand output, enabling them to supply more mushrooms to the Irish and UK markets.

In the UK, Monaghan Mushrooms holds 45% of the market, which is valued at €425m (£350m). In Ireland, the company has a 17% market share.

In addition to its base in Monaghan, the company has extensive operations in various locations throughout Ireland, the UK and has recently established a base in Canada.

Company founder and managing director Ronnie Wilson said the Monaghan development would have a positive impact both on company productivity and on the local economy, through the creation of new jobs.

Extremely difficult conditions continue within the Irish professional jobs market

Highlights

• During August 09, the volume of new professional job vacancies in Ireland rose by 5% but remained at the second lowest level recorded this year
• Despite this month on month increase, the number of new jobs fell 72% compared with a year ago (August 08)
• The number of Irish professionals who began their search for a new role during August 09 was down 17% versus the previous month (July 09)
• This figure decreased by 45% compared with the same month the previous year (August 08).

Month-on-month improvement in job numbers but hiring volumes still record second lowest level this year

During August 09, the Irish professional jobs market continued to operate at greatly suppressed levels despite the uplift in new job opportunities from the previous month. The number of new professional job vacancies in Ireland registered an increase of 5% versus July 09 however, this figure was the second lowest recorded so far this year. Additionally, the fifth Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor found that the volume of new professional job openings in Ireland was still 72% lower than it was in August 08.

Ireland’s professionals are still very hesitant to voluntarily enter such a contracted jobs market. It seems that many individuals who are still in employment are choosing to remain where they are for the time being rather than begin searching for a new role. This, coupled with the summer holiday season, contributed to the 17% drop in the number of new professional candidates who entered the jobs market during August 09 versus the previous month (July 09). This figure was 45% less than the number of professionals who began their search for a new role in August 08.

Brian Murphy, Managing Director of Premier Group in Ireland comments: “Despite a month-on-month increase in new professional job numbers in August 09, the hiring market was, and still is, extremely contracted, particularly when compared with a year ago. Now that the holiday season is over, we hope that there will be some improvement in the employment market in the next month. However, there is still little visibility on the short to medium-term professional jobs market in Ireland.

“There are several critical legislative changes on the horizon in September and October which could significantly affect the hiring market in Ireland, for example, the Lisbon referendum and the proposed NAMA legislation. Anecdotal evidence suggests that, over the coming weeks, many employers will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of the referendum and legislation and the implications of these for the Irish employment market.”

Seasonal factors stall Irish professional jobs market in July 09

New job volumes fall further in July 09

Highlights

• The number of new professional job vacancies in Ireland fell by 16% in July 09 compared to June 09 as the start of the summer season slowed hiring

• Compared to a year ago (July 08), new job opportunities continued to be at extremely low levels, down 75%

• The number of professionals who began their search for a new role in Ireland in July 09 increased by 7% versus June 09, however, this figure was still 48% down on July last year.

New job volumes fall further in July 09

During July 09, the number of new professional job opportunities coming onto the Irish market dropped by 16% versus the previous month (June 09) – the lowest number recorded this year – as the typically slow summer season further stalled an already delicate hiring market. The fourth edition of the Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor showed that in July 09 the recruitment market remained considerably contracted compared to a year ago. The number of available jobs coming onto the market fell 75% from July 08 to July 09.

The number of professionals who started looking for a new role in July 09 increased by 7% against the previous month (June 08), however, the new candidate figure was down 48% versus the same month the previous year (June 08). Anecdotally, this drop can be attributed to those professionals currently employed choosing to stay in their existing role rather than voluntarily entering a difficult jobs market.

Brian Murphy, Managing Director of Premier Group in Ireland comments:

“It is regrettable to see that the number of new professional job opportunities declined further in July, but in many ways this slowdown was expected. The summer months, particularly July and August, are traditionally a quieter period for recruitment due to the summer holiday season. This year, the decline in hiring volumes has been exacerbated by the difficult economic conditions. ”

“Despite the low job figures, there does seem to have been a slight improvement in employers’ commitment to the hiring process. Hiring managers are demonstrating a greater appetite to bring the hire to completion rather than put the vacancy ‘on hold’ mid-process, which had been a common occurrence earlier in the year. ”

“That said, it must be stressed that the recruitment market remains extremely competitive for those looking for work and so jobseekers really do need to be flexible and realistic about the type of role, salary and location that they are willing to consider. Despite July registering a month-on-month uplift in the number of people starting to look for a new role, many professionals currently in work are too nervous to voluntarily enter such a competitive hiring market. This can explain the 48% year-on-year drop in professional candidates actively seeking work in July.”

Within the space of a month we had more recruitment industry activity than ever before in Ireland. Irish National Recruitment Federation had its Annual conference, and you can read about it on Jobs Blog. Microsoft organised the Recruitment Conference and a Tuesday Club, and both those are reviewed on the same site.

2 out of 3 recruiters in Ireland have lost their jobs since the recession started. Only the bare bones of the recruitment industry actually still exists.

Smart economists use recruitment figures as a barometer of the economy. What has been happening in the last 9 months is that about 1% of the workforce is made redundant and does not find the new job, hence goes on the dole.

The current predictions of the unemployment we are going to have in Ireland vary from 14% to 17%. The current trend puts us steady on 12% sometime next week. 15% in September and 17% at the end of the year. So we should reach that worst case predictions before the end of 2009.

In the same time there is no one predicting any recovery to start happening in January 2010. In the same time we expect the unemployment to miraculously stop growing. The reality is that all the signs are that the unemployment growth rate is steady. The last 9 months more or less each decreased the workforce for 1%. All the signs today show that the same is to continue for at least the end of the year. We might enter 2010 with one in five unemployment rate.

In the same time there are thousands of jobs in Ireland. Literally. And recruiters are finding it hard to fill those jobs. Employers are expecting the highest quality candidates ever. The number of skills are still in extreme shortage in Ireland. In fact Google announced recently that they are pulling about 1000 jobs out of their Irish operation centre, simply because they have not been able to find people with skills they are looking for here.

If you are looking for a job today, get ready and get organised.
It is not going to be easy and it’s not going to be quick to get another job for the most. Prepare mentally for the wage drop. In the similar level to the house price drop, or even more in some industries.

Get your CV ready, go and look at the jobs available, and do not only send you CV to the employers, but do call them, talk to them and present yourself in your best. Remember – there really are thousands of jobs available today in Ireland!
